Mestiere

Mi son “formato” più che altro da solo. Poi a Firenze: sociologia, comunicazione, antropologia. Una laurea, un Master e un Dottorato internazionale — tutto pagato: borse, premi, pochi soldi in tasca. Insomma, mi ero fissato con lo studio e la ricerca. Scappate a Austin e a Parigi.

Il CNR mi ha riconosciuto ricercatore in scienze sociali senza darmi un posto; l’Università di Helsinki mi ha fatto Docent e mi ha dato un posto. Ho studiato le identità, individuali e collettive: i giovani e le generazioni, la globalizzazione culturale e il cosmopolitismo, i media e il sé. Con i metodi che mi somigliano — le storie di vita, l’etnografia — uno sguardo alla psiche, e una cosa a legare tutto: raccontare. Poi una borsa Marie Curie — una delle più prestigiose al mondo: sei bravo, molto bravo, dissero — mi ha riportato a Helsinki in pianta stabile, a studiare gli studenti internazionali: le loro storie, tra Nord e Sud Europa.

Insegno agli studenti americani a Firenze — Gonzaga, ISI, New Haven. Sono esperto valutatore di progetti di ricerca per la Commissione Europea: per un po’ l’ho fatto, anche per restituire. Poi dai, basta. Sedevo in comitati; a un certo punto mi sono alzato.

La sensibilità letteraria c’è sempre stata; a un certo punto ha preso il comando. Ora racconto storie. Memoir, non-fiction narrativa. Un ghostwriter di storie, a pagamento e non. La prossima, mi piacerebbe riapparire.

Ah, da giovanissimo giocavo a pallacanestro: Virtus Bologna. Insomma, è andata così: ci siamo ancora, e loro sono in gamba. Quella è una storia che meriterebbe davvero di essere raccontata.

I “trained” mostly on my own. Then Florence: sociology, communication, anthropology. A degree, a Master’s, an international Doctorate — all paid for: grants, prizes, little money in my pocket. I was hooked on study and research. Escapes to Austin and Paris.

The CNR certified me as a researcher in the social sciences — no post to go with it; the University of Helsinki made me Docent, post included. I studied identities, individual and collective: youth and generations, cultural globalization and cosmopolitanism, media and the self. With the methods that resemble me — life stories, ethnography — an eye on the psyche, and one thing holding it all together: telling stories. Then a Marie Curie fellowship — among the most prestigious in the world: talented, very talented, they said — took me back to Helsinki, this time to stay, to study international students: their stories, between Northern and Southern Europe.

I teach American students in Florence — Gonzaga, ISI, New Haven. I’m an expert evaluator of research projects for the European Commission: I did it for a while, partly to give something back. Then, enough. I sat on boards; at some point I stood up.

The literary sensibility was always there; at some point it took over. Now I tell stories. Memoir, narrative nonfiction. A ghostwriter of stories, for a fee and for free. Next one, I’d like to reappear.

Ah, when I was very young I played basketball: Virtus Bologna. Well, that’s how it went: we’re still around, and they’re sharp. Now that’s a story that would truly deserve to be told.
